Just looking at all the holiday and exotic honeymoon advertisements, brochures and internet can cause a lot of stress and confusion especially all the beautiful pictures look so attractive. Don't be! Just sit down relax and spend some time doing your research early. The time spent doing your homework is worth it and it can save you a lot of time, money and headache.

There are five basic planning steps I used for my dream get-away:
1. Examine your style
My fiancé and I love to travel sometimes backpacking. However we discussed and decided that we should pamper ourselves a little after a stressful period of wedding preparations and the wedding itself! We opt for a package tour to Australia, Sydney and Gold Coast all planned by our local travel agent. We used whatever time we saved from this to plan for our wedding.
I have a close friend who booked her air and accommodation tickets online, planned her travel and shopping route with her fiancé and they had a wonderful together at a beautiful beach resort in Bali, Indonesia two years ago. They also drove to a nearby village to see the local people doing handmade handicrafts and tasted local food and hospitality.
I read in a local newspaper that a couple spent their honeymoon volunteering with an international charitiable organisation, doing impressive work at an orphanage in a third world country.
Whatever it is, discuss and plan early together. If you are the planner, do not assume that your fiancé's travel likes and dislikes remain status quo during this time. Discuss and agree before you take action. It can be costly if you change your minds later.
2. Choose your destination
When choosing your desired destination, it is important that you note the tourists peak and off-season, the local weather conditions during the month of your stay, the local and international taxes and local currency rates for budget and cost saving purposes. Also don't forget to check on the weather so that you can bring appropriate clothings, high tide or low tide at the desired beach resort and the political situation of the city, country or island for safety reasons.
3. Online booking or travel agency?
Some net savvy travellers are really comfortable with the online booking system and they have travelled frequently. If you are those few blessed with an easy going, happy go lucky personlaity and you have no problems adjusting to last minute changes to an alternative hotel, resort or airline..
Lucky you!
My fiancé and I do not like the hassel of last mintue changes and we rather leave the arrangements to our trusted local travel agents.
So, do not be "pushed" to a decision by all the beautiful advertisements or travel agents. Get referrals, there are many websites and forums posted by newly weds on honeymoon
and honeymoon destinations. Do check them out before you head for that dream vacation!
4. Resorts of your dreams!
Whether you choose your fav airline to fly first class, economy or luxury cruise, stay at the five star hotel, resorts or budget hotels, choosing the ideal place and way to travel can be quite daunting if you are not a frequent traveller. When budgeting for your honeymoon, you will need to consider how much luxury you want, what kind of amenities that the hotel or resorts provide? How much time you spend in the hotel or resort room versus the outdoors? Do you want to rent a car and self drive or you prefer a guided tour of the scenic places?
5. Preparations and packing
Basic travel requirements like the six months validity of all passports, applications of visas (please check with your embassy or high commission), appropriate clothings,
medical check ups, medicines, purchase of travel insurance, essential contact numbers of both local and overseas travel agents, online agents and so on. If you plan to leave for your honeymoon immediately after your wedding, do get someone to take care of wrapping up the wedding, your house, your dog, your children and your deliveries.
If you have already done all the meticulous planning and double checked your
wedding planning checklist,
you are on your way to a great vacation!
